Description

A flavorful and vibrant Garlic Turmeric Rice recipe that combines aromatic garlic and earthy turmeric with fluffy basmati rice. This simple yet delicious side dish is cooked on the stovetop using stock for extra depth of flavor, making it perfect to accompany a variety of main courses.

Ingredients

Rice Base

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter or ghee
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 cup basmati rice (or long-grain rice), rinsed and drained
  • 2 cups chicken stock or vegetable stock
  • ½ tsp salt (or to taste)

Garnish

  • Fresh parsley or cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat Butter or Ghee: In a medium pot, melt the butter or ghee over medium heat to prepare the base for sautéing the aromatics.
  2. Sauté Onion: Add the finely diced onion to the pot and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onion softens and becomes translucent.
  3. Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant but not browned, to release its aromatic oils.
  4. Incorporate Turmeric: Sprinkle in turmeric powder and stir well to evenly coat the onion and garlic with the vibrant spice, enhancing color and flavor.
  5. Add Rice: Stir in the rinsed and drained basmati rice, coating each grain with the turmeric and aromatics mixture.
  6. Toast Rice: Cook the rice mixture for about 1 minute, allowing the rice to lightly toast and develop a nuttier flavor.
  7. Add Stock and Salt: Pour in the chicken or vegetable stock along with salt. Stir briefly to combine all ingredients evenly.
  8. Boil and Simmer: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low to allow gentle simmering.
  9. Cover and Cook: Cover the pot and let the rice simmer for 15 minutes, or until the liquid is fully absorbed and the rice is tender.
  10. Rest the Rice: Remove the pot from heat and let it sit, still covered, for 5 minutes to allow the steam to finish cooking the rice and to make it fluffier.
  11. Fluff and Garnish: Fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley or cilantro just before serving.

Notes

  • For a vegan option, substitute butter or ghee with olive oil or coconut oil and use vegetable stock.
  • Be sure to rinse the rice thoroughly to remove excess starch and prevent stickiness.
  • If you prefer a more vibrant turmeric flavor, you can increase the turmeric powder to 1.5 teaspoons.
  • Adjust salt to taste depending on the saltiness of your stock.
  • Garnish can be customized with fresh herbs such as mint or basil for a different flavor profile.
