Ingredients
For the Dough
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water (110°F)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
For the Garlic Butter Sauce
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy to ensure the yeast is active and ready for fermentation.
- Make Dough: Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture and mix until a soft dough forms. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic, which helps develop the gluten structure.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size, allowing the dough to ferment and expand.
- Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 400°F (204°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
- Shape Knots: Punch down the risen dough to release air, divide it into 12 equal pieces, roll each piece into a rope, and tie into a knot. Arrange the knots on the prepared baking sheet.
- Second Rise: Cover the shaped knots and let them rise for 15 minutes to develop a lighter texture before baking.
- Bake: Place the knots in the preheated oven and bake for 15–18 minutes until they turn golden brown and crisp on the outside.
- Prepare Garlic Butter Sauce: While knots bake, melt butter in a small pan over low heat. Stir in minced garlic, salt, chopped parsley, and red pepper flakes if using. Remove from heat once fragrant but before garlic browns.
- Brush and Serve: Remove the baked knots from the oven and immediately brush them generously with the warm garlic butter sauce. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese if desired. Serve warm for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- You can save time by using store-bought pizza dough instead of making dough from scratch.
- For extra garlicky flavor, double the amount of garlic in the butter sauce.
- Garlic knots are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the oven at 350°F for 5–7 minutes.
