Description

Funnel Cake Fries are a fun and delicious twist on the classic carnival favorite. These crispy, golden strips of fried batter are dusted with powdered sugar and perfect for dipping in chocolate, caramel, or strawberry sauce. With a simple batter made from flour, sugar, baking powder, milk, eggs, and vanilla, these funnel cake fries are easy to make at home and bring the fairground magic right to your kitchen.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Frying and Serving

  • Vegetable oil for frying (about 2 inches deep)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
  2. Mix the wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the whole milk, eggs, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
  3. Combine the batter: Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, whisking continuously to form a smooth, thick batter without lumps.
  4. Heat the oil: Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep skillet or pot and heat it to 350°F (175°C), using a thermometer to maintain the temperature.
  5. Pipe the batter: Transfer the batter to a piping bag or resealable plastic bag with a small corner snipped off. Carefully pipe long fry-like strips into the hot oil, working in batches to prevent overcrowding, which can cause uneven cooking.
  6. Fry the funnel cake fries: Fry each batch for 2 to 3 minutes per side until the fries turn golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to flip and remove them from the oil.
  7. Drain excess oil: Place the fried funnel cake fries on paper towels to absorb any excess oil and ensure they stay crisp.
  8. Serve: Dust the funnel cake fries generously with powdered sugar. Serve warm with optional dipping sauces like chocolate, caramel, or strawberry sauce.

Notes

  • Serve with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, or strawberry sauce for an extra indulgent treat.
  • Maintain a steady oil temperature of 350°F to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
  • Work in small batches to avoid overcrowding the pan, which can lower the oil temperature and result in greasy fries.
  • Use a thermometer to accurately gauge the oil temperature during frying.
