Ingredients
Scones:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- ½ cup cold unsalted butter (cut into small cubes)
- ⅓ cup heavy cream
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup fresh orange juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- ½ teaspoon orange zest
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Prepare the scone dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, whisk together the cream, egg, orange juice, and vanilla extract. Combine the wet and dry mixtures until just combined.
- Shape and bake: Turn the dough onto a floured surface, knead gently, pat into a circle, and cut into wedges. Place on the baking sheet and bake for 15–18 minutes until golden.
- Make the glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar, orange juice, and zest to form a smooth glaze.
- Finish and serve: Drizzle the glaze over the scones before serving.
Notes
- For extra citrus flavor, add a few drops of orange extract to the glaze.
- Scones are best enjoyed the same day but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
