Description

These fresh orange scones are bursting with citrus flavor and make a delightful breakfast or snack. The tender scones are complemented by a sweet orange glaze, making them a perfect treat to enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee.

Ingredients

Scones:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter (cut into small cubes)
  • ⅓ cup heavy cream
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • ½ teaspoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the scone dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, whisk together the cream, egg, orange juice, and vanilla extract. Combine the wet and dry mixtures until just combined.
  3. Shape and bake: Turn the dough onto a floured surface, knead gently, pat into a circle, and cut into wedges. Place on the baking sheet and bake for 15–18 minutes until golden.
  4. Make the glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar, orange juice, and zest to form a smooth glaze.
  5. Finish and serve: Drizzle the glaze over the scones before serving.

Notes

  • For extra citrus flavor, add a few drops of orange extract to the glaze.
  • Scones are best enjoyed the same day but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
