Ingredients

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet, add onions, butter, sugar, and salt. Cook until caramelized.
  2. Prepare the Meatballs: Mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Form into meatballs.
  3. Cook the Meatballs: Sear meatballs, sprinkle with flour, add onions and beef broth. Simmer until cooked through.
  4. Finish: Top with cheese, cover to melt. Garnish with parsley.

Notes

  • Serve over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or toasted baguette slices.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
