Description

Indulge in the rich and savory flavors of this homemade French Onion Dip that is perfect for any gathering or snack time. Caramelized onions mixed with creamy sour cream and mayonnaise create a delightful dip that pairs wonderfully with chips, crackers, or fresh veggies.

Ingredients

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar

For the Dip:

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • Chopped chives for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onion, salt, pepper, and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 25-30 minutes until the onions are deeply golden and caramelized. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
  2. Prepare the Dip: In a medium bowl, mix the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder until smooth. Stir in the cooled onions until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to develop. Garnish with chopped chives before serving if desired.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, substitute Greek yogurt for some or all of the sour cream.
  • This dip pairs perfectly with chips, crackers, or fresh veggies.
