Description

This French Onion Chicken recipe combines tender chicken breasts with sweet caramelized onions and gooey melted cheese for a deliciously comforting meal. Perfect for a cozy dinner at home, this dish is easy to make yet impressive enough for guests.

Ingredients

Chicken:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Sear chicken: Season chicken breasts with salt and pepper. Sear in olive oil until golden, then set aside.
  3. Caramelize onions: Cook onions and sugar in olive oil and butter until caramelized. Add garlic, thyme, and flour.
  4. Add broths: Slowly add beef and chicken broths to deglaze the pan.
  5. Bake: Return chicken to the skillet, top with cheeses, and bake until cooked through and bubbly.
  6. Garnish and serve: Garnish with herbs before serving.

Notes

  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread to soak up the sauce.
  • For extra richness, use all beef broth or add a splash of white wine when caramelizing the onions.
