Description

A delicious and hearty Epic Black Bean Burger that’s perfect for a healthy, flavorful meal. Made with black beans, whole wheat breadcrumbs, and a blend of spices, this burger offers a satisfying plant-based option that can be easily made vegan by substituting the egg with flaxseed meal. Serve it on whole grain or gluten-free buns with fresh toppings for a nutritious and tasty burger experience.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 large egg (or 1 tbsp flaxseed meal mixed with 3 tbsp water for a vegan option)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Burger Components

  • 4 whole grain or gluten-free burger buns
  • Toppings: lettuce, tomato slices, avocado

Instructions

  1. Mash the beans: In a large bowl, lightly mash the black beans using a fork until mostly smooth but still slightly chunky for texture.
  2. Sauté onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown, about 5 minutes.
  3. Combine ingredients: Stir in cumin and chili powder to the onions, then add the mashed beans, breadcrumbs, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and egg or flaxseed mixture. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
  4. Form patties: Shape the mixture into four equal patties about half an inch thick, ensuring they hold together well.
  5. Cook patties: Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each patty for 5-6 minutes on each side until they are crispy and cooked through.
  6. Assemble and serve: Place each cooked patty on the burger buns and top with lettuce, tomato slices, and avocado as desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • To make the burger vegan, replace the egg with a flaxseed meal mixture as described.
  • You can use gluten-free breadcrumbs and buns to make the recipe gluten-free.
  • Adjust spices to your taste preference for heat or flavor.
  • Cook patties carefully to avoid breaking by not over-mashing the beans.
  • Feel free to add your favorite sauces or cheese (for non-vegan versions) for extra flavor.
