Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 large egg (or 1 tbsp flaxseed meal mixed with 3 tbsp water for a vegan option)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Burger Components
- 4 whole grain or gluten-free burger buns
- Toppings: lettuce, tomato slices, avocado
Instructions
- Mash the beans: In a large bowl, lightly mash the black beans using a fork until mostly smooth but still slightly chunky for texture.
- Sauté onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown, about 5 minutes.
- Combine ingredients: Stir in cumin and chili powder to the onions, then add the mashed beans, breadcrumbs, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and egg or flaxseed mixture. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
- Form patties: Shape the mixture into four equal patties about half an inch thick, ensuring they hold together well.
- Cook patties: Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each patty for 5-6 minutes on each side until they are crispy and cooked through.
- Assemble and serve: Place each cooked patty on the burger buns and top with lettuce, tomato slices, and avocado as desired. Serve warm.
Notes
- To make the burger vegan, replace the egg with a flaxseed meal mixture as described.
- You can use gluten-free breadcrumbs and buns to make the recipe gluten-free.
- Adjust spices to your taste preference for heat or flavor.
- Cook patties carefully to avoid breaking by not over-mashing the beans.
- Feel free to add your favorite sauces or cheese (for non-vegan versions) for extra flavor.
