Description

This effortless Korean Braised Tofu recipe is a flavorful, quick 20-minute dish perfect for tofu lovers seeking a savory, spicy, and aromatic meal. Firm tofu is braised in a delightful mixture of soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and Korean red pepper flakes, then garnished with fresh scallions, making it an excellent main or side dish for any occasion.

Ingredients

Tofu

  • 400 grams of Firm Tofu

Sauce & Flavorings

  • 3 tablespoons of Soy Sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of Sesame Oil
  • 3 cloves of Garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of Ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon of Korean Red Pepper Flakes (Gochugaru)
  • 2 stalks of Scallions, chopped
  • 1 cup of Water

Instructions

  1. Press Tofu: Wrap the firm tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy pan on top. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to press out excess moisture for better texture and flavor absorption.
  2. Slice Tofu: After pressing, cut the tofu into roughly 1-inch thick cubes ensuring even cooking and braising.
  3. Sauté Aromatics: Heat sesame oil in a pan over medium heat until it glistens. Add minced garlic and grated ginger, sauté for approximately 2 minutes until fragrant and aromatic.
  4. Add Tofu and Sauce: Gently add tofu cubes into the pan followed by soy sauce, water, and Korean red pepper flakes. Stir lightly to coat the tofu evenly with the sauce mixture.
  5. Braise Tofu: Lower the heat to low, cover the pan, and allow the tofu to braise for 10-12 minutes. Flip the tofu halfway through to ensure all sides are evenly coated and flavorful.
  6. Finish and Serve: Remove the lid and stir in the chopped scallions. Serve the braised tofu hot, preferably over cooked rice or steamed vegetables for a complete, delicious meal.

Notes

  • Pressing the tofu thoroughly is key to achieving a firmer texture that absorbs the braising sauce better.
  • You can adjust the quantity of Korean red pepper flakes to suit your preferred spice level.
  • Serve immediately after cooking to enjoy the best texture and flavor.
  • This recipe pairs well with steamed rice, noodles, or a simple vegetable side dish.
