Description

A comforting, hearty dish featuring perfectly seasoned ground meat, sweet peas, vibrant carrots, and creamy mashed potatoes, all baked to golden perfection. This Easy Shepherd’s Pie is the ultimate cozy meal that’s as delicious as it is simple.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled
  • 1/4 cup butter (for mashed potatoes)
  • 1/4 cup milk (for mashed potatoes)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheddar or Parmesan (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking dish by greasing or lining with parchment paper.
  2. Start by boiling the peeled potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 10-15 minutes. Drain and mash with butter and milk. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Optionally, add cheese to the mashed potatoes for extra flavor.
  3. While the potatoes cook, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the ground meat until fully cooked, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat.
  4. Add the diced onion, garlic, and chopped carrots to the skillet, and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and broth. Let it simmer for 3-5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly. Stir in the peas and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  6. Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture into a baking dish, smoothing it into an even layer.
  7. Carefully spread the mashed potatoes over the meat mixture, covering it completely. If desired, sprinkle with shredded cheese for a bubbly, golden topping.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is lightly browned and the filling is bubbling around the edges. Allow it to cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Ground turkey can be used instead of beef or lamb for a lighter version.
  • Feel free to add extra vegetables like green beans or corn to the filling.
  • For a dairy-free version, swap the butter and milk in the mashed potatoes for olive oil and plant-based milk.
  • If you prefer a crispier potato topping, broil for an additional 2-3 minutes at the end of baking.
