Description

These easy matcha cookies are rich and flavorful with nutty brown butter and earthy green tea powder. Crispy on the edges and soft in the center, they’re a unique twist on classic cookies.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp matcha green tea powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat until it foams and turns golden brown with a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, matcha powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the browned butter with granulated sugar and brown sugar until combined.
  4. Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and stir until smooth.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until a dough forms. Chill the dough for 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Scoop tablespoon-sized amounts of dough and place them on the baking sheet, spaced 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  9. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use high-quality matcha for the best flavor and color.
  • Brown butter adds a deeper flavor, but can be replaced with regular melted butter if preferred.
  • Dough can be made ahead and chilled overnight for a more developed flavor.
