Description

Easy Irish Soda Bread is a quick and traditional recipe that results in a delicious loaf perfect for any occasion. This no-yeast bread is simple to make and requires basic pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Additional Ingredients:

  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (cold and cubed)
  • 1/2 cup raisins or currants (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and prepare a baking sheet.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar if desired.
  3. Add butter: Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles crumbs.
  4. Incorporate wet ingredients: Stir in buttermilk and knead to form a dough.
  5. Shape and bake: Shape the dough into a loaf, score the top, and bake until golden.
  6. Cool and serve: Allow the bread to cool on a rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For a more traditional version, omit the sugar and raisins.
  • If buttermilk is unavailable, substitute with milk mixed with lemon juice or vinegar.
