Ingredients
Salisbury Steak Patties
- 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Gravy
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, egg, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, then form into 4 oval-shaped patties.
- Sear the Patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and sear for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until browned but not fully cooked through. Remove the patties from skillet and set aside.
- Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté for about 5 minutes until softened and fragrant.
- Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms, stirring to evenly coat the vegetables. Slowly whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce until smooth. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the browned patties to the skillet, spooning some gravy over them. Cover the skillet and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
- Serve: Serve the Salisbury steak hot with the mushroom and onion gravy spooned over, ideally over mashed potatoes or rice for a hearty meal.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version of Salisbury steak.
- Add a splash of heavy cream to the gravy for a richer, creamier texture.
- Leftovers reheat well and make for convenient meal prep options.
