Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for kneading)
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted (plus extra for brushing)
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: Combine the warm milk, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Stir the melted butter, egg, and salt into the yeast mixture until well combined.
- Incorporate Flour: Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition until a soft dough forms.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic, which helps develop the gluten for a chewy texture.
- First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape Rolls: Punch down the risen dough to release air, divide it into 12 equal portions, and shape each portion into a round ball.
- Second Rise: Arrange the dough balls on a greased baking sheet or in a 9×13-inch dish. Cover with a cloth and allow to rise for another 30 minutes until puffy.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes or until the tops are golden brown and cooked through.
- Finish: Remove the rolls from the oven and brush the tops with melted butter to give them a shiny, soft crust. Serve warm.
Notes
- Ensure the milk is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
- Extra flour may be needed during kneading, but avoid adding too much to keep rolls soft.
- Brushing with butter after baking adds flavor and a beautiful sheen.
- These rolls can be frozen after shaping and before the second rise for later baking.
- For a richer flavor, substitute whole milk or add a bit of honey instead of sugar.
