Ingredients
Apples
- 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 8 wedges each
Dough
- 1 (8 oz) can refrigerated crescent roll dough
Sauce
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1 (12 oz) can lemon-lime soda (such as Sprite or 7-Up)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and cut each Granny Smith apple into 8 wedges, resulting in 16 wedges total for wrapping.
- Wrap the Apples: Unroll the crescent roll dough and separate it into 8 triangles. Place one apple wedge at the wide end of each triangle and roll it up, pinching the ends to seal completely. Arrange each wrapped apple dumpling evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- Make the Sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Stir in the granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg if using, mixing well until smooth and combined.
- Add the Sauce and Soda: Pour the prepared butter-sugar mixture evenly over the apple dumplings in the baking dish. Then pour the lemon-lime soda around the edges of the dish carefully, avoiding pouring it directly on top of the dumplings to keep them intact.
- Bake the Dumplings: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and the sauce is bubbling and caramelized.
- Serve: Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly. Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgent dessert.
Notes
- Use tart Granny Smith apples for a crisp texture and balanced sweetness.
- The lemon-lime soda adds a light fizz and helps caramelize the sauce during baking.
- You can omit the nutmeg if you prefer a simpler cinnamon flavor.
- For easier cleanup, line your baking dish with parchment paper or foil.
- Serve fresh out of the oven for the best flavor and texture.
