Ingredients
Crust and Topping
- 1 package Oreos (approximately 36 cookies)
- Easter Candy (Peeps, Robin Eggs, and sprinkles for decoration)
Filling
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 16 oz Cool Whip (whipped topping)
- 2 boxes instant vanilla pudding mix (3.3 oz size each)
- 3 cups milk
Instructions
- Prepare Pudding: In a large bowl, whisk together the instant vanilla pudding mixes with 3 cups of cold milk. Stir continuously for about 2 minutes until the mixture begins to thicken. Set aside and allow it to fully set, about 5 minutes.
- Make Cream Cheese Mixture: In a separate mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy using a hand mixer or stand mixer. Gradually add powdered sugar and beat until combined and fluffy.
- Combine Cream Cheese and Cool Whip: Fold the Cool Whip gently into the cream cheese mixture until well incorporated, keeping the mixture light and airy.
- Mix Pudding and Cream Cheese Mixture: Fold the fully set vanilla pudding into the cream cheese and Cool Whip mixture gently until just combined, creating a smooth and creamy filling.
- Crush Oreos: Place the Oreo cookies in a large zip-top bag and crush them into coarse crumbs using a rolling pin or pulse a few times in a food processor, leaving some chunkier pieces for texture.
- Assemble the Dirt Cake: In a large trifle dish or a 9×13 inch baking dish, start by spreading a thin layer of the pudding mixture on the bottom. Sprinkle a layer of crushed Oreos over the pudding. Repeat layers two more times, ending with a generous layer of crushed Oreos on top to resemble dirt.
- Decorate: Decorate the top layer of crushed Oreos with Easter candy such as Peeps, Robin Eggs, and colorful sprinkles to create a festive dirt garden look.
- Chill: Cover the assembled cake with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the dessert to firm up.
- Serve: Before serving, optionally add extra Easter candy on top for garnish. Scoop portions and enjoy this creamy, crunchy, sweet Easter treat.
Notes
- Make sure the cream cheese and butter are softened for easier mixing and a smoother filling.
- Use cold milk to ensure the pudding sets properly.
- For a quicker version, the cake can be assembled and eaten after 2 hours of chilling, but overnight refrigeration yields the best texture.
- This dessert is best served chilled and not left out at room temperature for extended periods.
- Can be made a day in advance to enhance flavor melding.
- Variations: Use chocolate pudding instead of vanilla, or substitute the Easter candy decorations with gummy worms for a classic dirt cake twist.
