Description

These Easiest Cream Puffs feature light and airy choux pastry filled with a luscious whipped cream filling. Perfect for a classic French dessert, they’re simple to prepare and bake to golden perfection. Filled with sweetened vanilla whipped cream, these cream puffs are elegant and delicious treats that can be enjoyed any time.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 large eggs

Filling

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Make the Dough: In a medium saucepan, combine butter, water, and salt over medium heat and bring to a boil. Add the flour all at once and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a ball and comes away from the sides of the pan, about 1–2 minutes. Remove from heat and let the dough cool for 5 minutes.
  3. Add Eggs: Add eggs one at a time to the dough, beating well after each addition until the dough is smooth and glossy. This step is crucial for proper choux pastry consistency.
  4. Shape Puffs: Using a spoon or a piping bag, drop tablespoon-sized mounds of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart to allow room for expansion.
  5. Bake: Bake the puffs for 25–30 minutes or until they are puffed up and golden brown. Do not open the oven door during baking to prevent collapsing. Once baked, transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Prepare Filling: Using a hand mixer, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form, creating a light and fluffy whipped cream filling.
  7. Assemble Cream Puffs: Slice each puff horizontally in half, fill generously with the whipped cream, and replace the tops. Optionally, dust with extra powdered sugar before serving for a finishing touch.

Notes

  • You can prepare the cream puffs ahead of time and freeze them unfilled for convenience.
  • For a richer filling, try using pastry cream or a combination of whipped cream and custard.
