Ingredients

Filling:

  • 2 1/2 lbs (about 6 cups) peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Crust and Topping:

  • 1 package (14 oz) refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
  • 1 egg, beaten with 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
  • Optional: coarse sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Prepare the crust: Place one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish.
  3. Prepare the filling: Toss apples with sugars, flour, spices, salt, and lemon juice.
  4. Fill the pie: Pour apple mixture into the crust, top with butter, cover with second crust.
  5. Bake: Brush top with egg wash, sprinkle with sugar, and bake for 45–50 minutes.
