Ingredients
Filling:
- 2 1/2 lbs (about 6 cups) peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Crust and Topping:
- 1 package (14 oz) refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
- 1 egg, beaten with 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
- Optional: coarse sugar for sprinkling
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Prepare the crust: Place one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish.
- Prepare the filling: Toss apples with sugars, flour, spices, salt, and lemon juice.
- Fill the pie: Pour apple mixture into the crust, top with butter, cover with second crust.
- Bake: Brush top with egg wash, sprinkle with sugar, and bake for 45–50 minutes.
- Cool and serve: Let cool at least 2 hours before slicing.

- You can use a mix of tart and sweet apples for more flavor depth.
