Ingredients
Puff Pastry:
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
Pastry Cream:
- 2 cups whole milk
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 4 large egg yolks
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
Whipped Cream (optional):
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp powdered sugar
- Powdered sugar or icing for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry, cut into 3 rectangles, prick with a fork, and bake until golden and crisp, about 15-20 minutes. Cool.
- Make Pastry Cream: Heat milk, mix yolks, sugar, cornstarch, temper with milk, cook until thickened. Add vanilla and butter, chill.
- Optional Whipped Cream: Whip heavy cream and powdered sugar to soft peaks, fold into chilled pastry cream.
- Assemble: Layer pastry and cream, finishing with pastry. Dust with sugar or icing. Chill before slicing.
Notes
- For clean layers, use a ruler and sharp knife to trim edges.
- Substitute pastry cream with whipped mascarpone for a twist.
- Serve chilled.
