Description

This Cuban Turkey Sandwich recipe brings a delicious twist on the traditional Cuban sandwich by using thinly sliced turkey breast along with classic ingredients like Swiss cheese, ham, dill pickles, and yellow mustard. The sandwich is pressed in a skillet or sandwich press until golden, crispy, and melty—perfect for a quick and satisfying meal in just 18 minutes.

Ingredients

Bread and Spread

  • 4 slices Cuban bread (or French/Italian loaf, about 6 inches each)
  • 2 teaspoons butter (softened)
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard

Filling

  • 6 oz (170g) thinly sliced turkey breast
  • 2 oz (56g) thinly sliced ham (optional)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup (60g) dill pickles, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread: Slice your Cuban bread lengthwise and lightly butter the outside of both slices. This helps achieve a golden, crispy crust when cooking.
  2. Layer it up: Spread yellow mustard evenly on the inside of both bread slices. Then layer the turkey breast, ham (if using), Swiss cheese, and dill pickles evenly on one slice.
  3. Press to impress: Close the sandwich and press it using a sandwich press or a heavy skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes per side until the bread is golden and crispy, and the cheese has fully melted.
  4. Slice and serve: Remove the sandwich from the press or skillet, cut it diagonally, and serve immediately while hot and crispy for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Using Cuban bread is traditional, but French or Italian loaf works well too.
  • Butter on the outside of the bread is key to getting a crispy, golden crust.
  • The ham is optional, so you can omit it if you prefer a lighter sandwich.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the sandwich while the cheese is melted and the bread is crispy.
  • If you don’t have a sandwich press, a heavy skillet and a weighted object (like another pan) work just as well.
