Description
A hearty and comforting Crockpot Pierogi Casserole with Kielbasa featuring layers of frozen cheese pierogi, savory kielbasa, onions, and cheddar cheese, all cooked slowly in a creamy sour cream and chicken broth mixture. Perfect for an easy, crowd-pleasing main course with minimal prep.
Ingredients
Ingredients
- 24 frozen cheese pierogi
- 14 ounces kielbasa, sliced into rounds
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Chopped green onions for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the slow cooker: Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- Layer the ingredients: Place half of the frozen pierogi in an even layer on the bottom of the slow cooker. Follow with half of the sliced kielbasa and half of the thinly sliced onions. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar cheese over the top. Repeat these layers with the remaining pierogi, kielbasa, onions, and cheddar cheese to build the casserole.
- Make the sauce: In a bowl, whisk together the sour cream, chicken broth, garlic powder, and black pepper until smooth. This creamy mixture will infuse the casserole with flavor as it cooks.
- Add sauce and butter: Pour the sour cream mixture evenly over the layered ingredients in the slow cooker. Dot the top of the casserole with small pieces of butter to add richness.
- Cook the casserole: Cover and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours or on high for 2 to 3 hours. Cook until the pierogi are tender and heated through, and the kielbasa is hot.
- Serve: Gently stir the casserole before serving to mix the layers slightly. Garnish with chopped green onions if desired for a fresh, colorful touch.
Notes
- For extra richness, stir in an additional 1/2 cup of sour cream at the end of cooking.
- This casserole can be transferred to an oven-safe dish and finished under the broiler for a few minutes to brown the top if desired.
