Ingredients
For the custard:
- 2 cups whole milk
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 4 large egg yolks
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Additional:
- 2 ripe bananas, sliced
- Whipped cream for topping (optional)
- Crushed vanilla wafers or graham crackers for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, whisk together milk, sugar, cornstarch, and salt until smooth.
- Lightly beat the egg yolks in a separate bowl. Gradually whisk about ½ cup of the hot milk mixture into the yolks to temper, then return the mixture to the saucepan.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened and boiling, about 5–7 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in butter and vanilla.
- Let custard cool for 5–10 minutes. Layer in cups with banana slices. Top with whipped cream and crushed wafers. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving.
