Description

Make your own adorable, delicious Starbucks-inspired cake pops at home! These bite-sized treats feature moist vanilla cake mixed with creamy frosting, dipped in candy coating, and topped with festive sprinkles for the ultimate customizable sweet snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Cake

  • 1 box vanilla cake mix (plus ingredients required on the box: usually eggs, oil, and water)

Frosting

  • 1/3 cup vanilla frosting (store-bought or homemade)

Coating & Decoration

  • 12 oz pink candy melts (or any preferred color)
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil or vegetable shortening (optional, for thinning candy melts)
  • Sprinkles, for decorating
  • About 24 cake pop sticks

Instructions

  1. Bake the Cake
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare the boxed vanilla cake mix according to package directions. Bake in a 9×13-inch pan until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan.
  2. Crumble the Cake
Once cooled, break the cake into large pieces and crumble it into fine crumbs using your hands in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Mix with Frosting
Add 1/3 cup vanilla frosting to the crumbled cake. Mix with a spatula (or clean hands) until the mixture holds together and is moist but not overly sticky.
  4. Shape the Pops
Using a small cookie scoop or tablespoon, portion out equal amounts of the cake mixture and roll into balls, about 1-1.5 inches in diameter. Place on a lined baking sheet.
  5. Chill the Cake Balls
Refrigerate the cake balls for at least 2 hours, or freeze for 40 minutes, until firm.
  6. Prepare the Coating
Melt the candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second increments, stirring in between, until smooth. Stir in coconut oil or vegetable shortening if needed to thin the coating.
  7. Insert Sticks
Dip the tip of each cake pop stick about 1/2 inch into the melted candy coating, then insert it halfway into each chilled cake ball. This helps secure the pop on the stick.
  8. Dip the Pops
One at a time, dip each cake pop into the melted candy coating, gently rotating to coat. Let excess drip off.
  9. Decorate and Set
Immediately add sprinkles before the coating sets. Insert the stick upright into a foam block or stand to let the coating firm up completely.

Notes

  • Store finished cake pops in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the fridge for a week.
  • If cake balls are too soft, chill longer before dipping to prevent them from falling off the sticks.
  • Get creative with cake flavors and coating colors for different occasions.
  • Use a styrofoam block or an upside-down egg carton to hold cake pops while the coating dries.
