Description
A classic Cinnamon Apple Crisp recipe featuring tender, spiced apples baked under a crunchy oat and brown sugar topping. Perfectly balanced with warm cinnamon and nutmeg, this comforting dessert is easy to prepare and ideal for family gatherings or cozy evenings.
Ingredients
Apple Filling
- 6 cups sliced apples (about 6-7 medium apples)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
- Pinch of ground cloves
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
Topping
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold and cubed)
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it’s ready for baking the apple crisp evenly.
- Prepare the filling: Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick slices for an even texture when baked.
- Mix the apples: In a large bowl, combine sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Toss well until apples are evenly coated, which helps thicken the juices during baking.
- Transfer to baking dish: Pour the apple mixture into a 9×13-inch baking dish and spread it out evenly.
- Make the topping: In a medium bowl, combine rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add cold, cubed butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in chopped nuts, if using, for added crunch and flavor.
- Assemble the crisp: Evenly sprinkle the topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish to fully cover it.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges. If the topping starts to brown too quickly, cover the crisp loosely with aluminum foil to prevent burning.
- Cool and serve: Remove from the oven and let the crisp cool for 15-20 minutes so the filling can set. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat.
Notes
- Choose tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for a balanced sweet-tart flavor.
- Make sure the butter is cold when mixing into the topping for a crumbly texture.
- Cover with foil if topping browns too quickly during baking.
- Let the crisp cool slightly to allow filling to thicken before serving.
- This dessert can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated before serving.
