Description
Christmas Crack, also known as Cracker Toffee, is a deliciously addictive holiday treat made by layering saltine crackers with a rich butter and brown sugar toffee, baked to bubbly perfection, and topped with melted chocolate and festive sprinkles. This easy-to-make dessert combines sweet, salty, and crunchy textures that are perfect for sharing during the holiday season.
Ingredients
Base Layer
- 40-48 saltine crackers (about 1 1/2 sleeves)
Toffee Layer
- 1 cup butter (salted or unsalted, 2 sticks)
- 1 cup brown sugar (packed, dark brown sugar)
Topping
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (or milk chocolate chips, or white, or combination)
- ½ cup sprinkles (or M&M’s, crushed candy canes, or candies of choice to decorate)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ to prepare for baking the toffee.
- Prepare Baking Tray: Line a rimmed sheet pan (15″×10″) with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, or use a nonstick silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
- Arrange Crackers: Place the saltine crackers in a single even layer on the bottom of the tray. Break a few crackers if needed to fill gaps along the edges, ensuring the entire surface is covered.
- Make Toffee: In a medium pot over medium-low heat, melt the butter and add brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally, and cook for 3 minutes until it is bubbling and amber in color. If using a candy thermometer, cook until it reaches 270℉-290℉. Remove from heat.
- Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Carefully pour the hot toffee evenly over the crackers and quickly spread with a spatula to cover all crackers.
- Bake: Place the sheet pan in the preheated oven and bake for 3-5 minutes, or until the toffee mixture starts to bubble.
- Add Chocolate: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately scatter the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let sit for 1-2 minutes, then use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate. If the chocolate doesn’t melt easily, return the pan to the oven for 1-2 minutes and then spread.
- Add Sprinkles: While the chocolate is still soft, sprinkle your choice of decorations such as sprinkles, M&M’s, or crushed candy canes evenly on top.
- Cool and Harden: Let the toffee cool completely at room temperature or refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour to harden the chocolate and toffee layers.
- Break Into Pieces: Once hardened, flip the tray over to remove the toffee from the pan and peel off the parchment or foil. Break into pieces by hand or cut with a sharp knife.
- Serve and Store: Enjoy immediately or store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge.
Notes
- Use dark brown sugar for a richer flavor and deeper color in the toffee.
- If you don’t have a candy thermometer, cook the toffee mixture for about 3 minutes once it reaches a rolling boil.
- Feel free to customize the topping with white chocolate chips or a mix of chocolates for variety.
- Sprinkles or crushed candy canes not only add decoration but also an extra holiday flavor and texture.
- Ensure to spread the toffee quickly before it cools and hardens on the crackers.
- Store the Christmas Crack in an airtight container to maintain freshness and crunch.
