Description

This decadent Chocolate Turtle Cake features rich chocolate layers combined with a luscious caramel-pecan filling, topped with chocolate chips and drizzled with caramel and chocolate sauces. Perfect for fans of classic turtle candy flavors baked into a moist, delightful cake.

Ingredients

Cake Layer

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box)

Caramel Pecan Layer

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Toppings

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/4 cup chocolate sauce
  • Additional pecans for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake Mix: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan to prevent sticking. Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the package instructions, ensuring the batter is smooth and ready.
  2. Bake the First Layer: Pour half of the prepared cake batter evenly into the greased pan. Place it in the oven and bake for 15 minutes until partially set.
  3. Make the Caramel Layer: While the first cake layer is baking, combine the unsalted butter, packed brown sugar, and heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture comes to a gentle boil. Continue cooking for 2 minutes to thicken, then remove from heat and stir in the chopped pecans.
  4. Assemble the Layers: Remove the partially baked cake from the oven and carefully pour the warm caramel-pecan mixture over it. Sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly on top of the caramel layer. Then, pour the remaining half of the cake batter over the entire pan, spreading it gently and evenly.
  5. Bake Again: Return the pan to the oven and bake for another 20 to 25 minutes. The cake is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Add Toppings: Allow the finished cake to cool slightly at room temperature. Drizzle caramel sauce and chocolate sauce over the top. Optionally, garnish with extra pecans for added texture and flavor before serving.

Notes

  • Use freshly chopped pecans for best texture and flavor.
  • Allow the cake to cool enough to prevent sauces from running off too much when drizzling.
  • Substitute chocolate cake mix with homemade if desired.
  • Store leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
