Ingredients
Cake:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup hot water
Mousse:
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- Chocolate shavings or curls for garnish (optional)

- Cake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch springform pan. Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, oil, egg, and vanilla. Combine wet and dry ingredients, then stir in hot water until smooth. Bake for 25–28 minutes. Cool completely.
- Mousse: Melt chocolate chips, let cool. Whip cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form. Fold in melted chocolate. Spread mousse over cooled cake. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
- Serving: Dust with cocoa powder, garnish with chocolate shavings. Slice and serve.
Notes
- Use dark chocolate for a richer mousse.
- This cake can be made a day ahead and stored in the fridge until serving.
