Description

Delight in these crispy Chile Relleno Wontons featuring melted Monterey Jack cheese and spicy green chilies wrapped in wonton wrappers, fried to golden perfection and served with a bold jalapeño soy dipping sauce. A perfect appetizer combining Tex-Mex flavors with an Asian twist.

Ingredients

Wontons

  • 30 wonton wrappers
  • 1 lb Monterey Jack cheese, cut into 1/2 to 1 1/2-inch strips
  • Green chilies and hot green chiles, cut into strips (quantity based on preference)
  • Oil, for frying (about 2 cups or as needed)

Jalapeño Soy Dipping Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 minced jalapeño
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Wontons: Lay out the wonton wrappers on a clean, dry surface. Place one strip of Monterey Jack cheese and one strip of green or hot chili (according to your preferred spice level) onto the center of each wrapper.
  2. Seal the Wontons: Lightly moisten the edges of the wonton wrapper with water to help them stick. Fold the wrapper over the filling into a triangle or your preferred shape, pressing the edges firmly to seal completely and prevent cheese from leaking out. Allow the sealed wontons to rest for a few minutes before cooking.
  3. Fry the Wontons: Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully fry each wonton for 1 to 2 minutes until they turn golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the wontons and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  4. Make the Dipping Sauce: In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, minced jalapeño, honey, and sesame oil. Allow the sauce to sit for at least 10 minutes to let the flavors meld beautifully.
  5. Serve: Serve the crispy chile relleno wontons hot with the jalapeño soy dipping sauce. For added variety, pair them with queso, salsa, or ranch dressing as desired.

Notes

  • Ensure the edges of the wonton wrappers are sealed tightly to prevent cheese from leaking out during frying.
  • The spice level can be adjusted by choosing mild green chilies or hotter chiles as per your preference.
  • Use fresh oil and maintain the temperature at 350°F for perfect crispiness without excessive oil absorption.
  • The dipping sauce flavors improve if prepared and rested ahead of time.
  • Leftover wontons can be reheated in an air fryer or oven to maintain their crispiness.
