Description

A delicious twist on classic Sloppy Joes featuring ground chicken simmered in a savory tomato sauce with Italian herbs, topped with melted mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, served on toasted sandwich buns.

Ingredients

Chicken Mixture

  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Assembly

  • 4 sandwich buns or hamburger rolls
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Sauté Aromatics: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add finely chopped onions and minced garlic, then sauté until fragrant and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Cook Ground Chicken: Add the ground chicken to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until the chicken is browned and no longer pink, approximately 7 to 10 minutes.
  3. Simmer the Sauce: Stir in crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat and let the mixture simmer for around 10 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  4. Melt Cheese: Mix in the shredded mozzarella cheese into the sauce, stirring until it melts and combines evenly.
  5. Toast Buns: Place sandwich buns under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes until they are golden brown and toasted.
  6. Assemble Sloppy Joes: Spoon the cheesy chicken mixture onto each toasted bun and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Use fresh Italian seasoning or a mix of basil, oregano, and thyme for better flavor.
  • For extra heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes while simmering the sauce.
  • Ground turkey can be used as a substitute for ground chicken.
  • To make it lower fat, use part-skim mozzarella and reduce olive oil to 1 teaspoon.
  • To avoid sogginess, toast the buns right before assembling the sandwich.
