Description

These Chicken Cheese Steak Sandwiches are a flavorful and satisfying meal featuring tender, thinly sliced chicken cooked with onions, bell peppers, and a blend of spices. Melted provolone cheese and optional toppings like sautéed mushrooms and pickled jalapeños complete this easy-to-make sandwich perfect for a quick lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Chicken and Vegetables

  • 1 lb chicken breast or thighs, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Spices and Sauces

  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (optional)

Sandwich Assembly

  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese)
  • Optional toppings: sautéed mushrooms, pickled jalapeños, extra onions and bell peppers

Instructions

  1. Heat the skillet: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat to prepare for cooking the chicken and vegetables.
  2. Cook the chicken: Add the thinly sliced chicken to the hot skillet and cook until fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  3. Add onions and bell peppers: Add the sliced onion and bell pepper to the skillet and continue cooking for an additional 5 minutes until vegetables are softened and fragrant.
  4. Season the mixture: Stir in minced garlic, paprika, salt, black pepper, dried oregano, and dried thyme. Cook for 1-2 minutes more to let the spices bloom and flavors meld.
  5. Add soy sauce (optional): For extra depth of flavor, stir in the soy sauce and mix well to evenly coat the chicken and vegetables.
  6. Toast the rolls: Lightly toast the hoagie or sub rolls if desired for added texture and flavor.
  7. Add cheese: Place a slice of provolone cheese on the bottom half of each toasted roll to prepare for sandwich assembly.
  8. Assemble the sandwich: Pile the hot chicken and vegetable mixture on top of the cheese on each roll.
  9. Melt the cheese: Broil or toast the assembled sandwiches for 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts and turns slightly bubbly.
  10. Add optional toppings: Add optional toppings such as sautéed mushrooms, pickled jalapeños, or extra sautéed onions and bell peppers as desired.
  11. Serve hot: Serve the sandwiches immediately while warm and enjoy the melty, flavorful chicken cheese steak experience.

Notes

  • You can substitute chicken thighs for chicken breasts for a juicier sandwich.
  • Use American cheese if provolone is not available for a classic flavor.
  • To add extra spice, include pickled jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce.
  • Toast the rolls lightly before assembly to prevent sogginess.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated in a skillet or oven for best results.
