Description

This wholesome Chicken & Rice recipe is specially crafted for dogs, combining nutrient-rich brown rice, tender boneless chicken breast, and optional green beans for a balanced homemade meal. Easy to prepare on the stovetop, this recipe delivers a hearty dish that is gentle on your dog’s digestive system and perfect for mixing with kibble to add variety and moisture.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups whole grain brown rice
  • 5 oz boneless chicken breast (fresh or frozen; never give chicken bones to dogs)
  • 1 cup green beans (optional, fresh or frozen)

Instructions

  1. Bring water to boil: Place 4 cups of water in a pot and heat over medium-high until it reaches a rolling boil.
  2. Add rice and layer ingredients: Stir in 2 cups of whole grain brown rice. Arrange the boneless chicken breast and optional green beans on top of the rice without stirring.
  3. Simmer covered: Cover the pot and reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for 40-50 minutes, or until the rice has absorbed all the water and you see steam holes on the surface. Note that cooking time for brown rice generally takes about 50 minutes, but if your rice package states a shorter time (around 20 minutes), start checking for doneness earlier.
  4. Cut and combine: Using kitchen or poultry shears, cut the cooked chicken and green beans into small, dog-friendly pieces. Stir everything together to combine evenly.
  5. Cool safely: Transfer the mixture to a container and create a hole in the middle to allow steam to escape. Refrigerate uncovered for four hours to ensure it cools adequately before covering to maintain food safety.
  6. Serve with kibble: At meal times, add two tablespoons of the chicken and rice mixture to each cup of your dog’s kibble. Add a little warm water to lightly moisten; stir well and watch your dog enjoy this nutritious meal.

Notes

  • Whole grain brown rice requires a longer cooking time (~50 minutes). If using white rice or rice labeled as quick-cooking, adjust cooking times accordingly and check earlier.
  • Do not give dogs chicken bones as they can splinter and cause harm.
  • Green beans are optional and should be fresh or frozen without added seasonings. Other safe vegetables for dogs include carrots and peas, but always introduce new ingredients gradually.
  • Store the prepared food in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to seven days.
