Description
A comforting and easy-to-make cheesy rice side dish featuring tender long-grain white rice cooked in broth, then combined with creamy melted cheddar cheese and a touch of milk for extra richness. Perfect for pairing with a variety of main courses or enjoying on its own.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 cup long-grain white rice
- 2 cups water or chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional: 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Boil liquid and start rice: Bring the water or chicken broth to a boil in a medium saucepan to prepare the cooking liquid for the rice.
- Add rice and butter: Stir in the long-grain white rice, butter, and salt. Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let the rice simmer gently.
- Simmer the rice: Cook the rice covered on low heat for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the rice is tender and all the liquid is absorbed.
- Rest the rice: Remove the saucepan from heat and keep it covered for 5 minutes to let the rice finish steaming and firm up.
- Fluff and mix cheese: Fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains. Stir in the milk, shredded cheddar cheese, black pepper, and garlic powder if using. Continue stirring until the cheese has fully melted and the rice turns creamy.
- Serve warm: Transfer the cheesy rice to serving dishes and enjoy immediately as a delicious side to your favorite meals.
Notes
- For a creamier texture, add an extra splash of milk while stirring in the cheese.
- You can substitute shredded mozzarella, Colby Jack, or a cheese blend for the cheddar cheese according to your preference.
- The recipe works great with water or chicken broth for added flavor.
- Adjust the seasoning by adding more salt or pepper to taste.
