Description

A flavorful and aromatic recipe for Char Siu Chicken Roast that combines traditional Chinese flavors with tender chicken pieces. This dish is marinated in a savory blend of hoisin sauce, honey, and spices, then roasted to perfection for a sticky, charred finish.

Ingredients

Marinade:

  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese Shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring (optional, for traditional color)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Chicken:

  • 2 lbs bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs or drumsticks

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a medium bowl, whisk together all the marinade ingredients. Reserve 2 tablespoons for basting.
  2. Marinate the Chicken: Coat the chicken pieces with the marinade, cover, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  3. Roast the Chicken: Preheat the oven, place the chicken on a rack, and roast at 400°F for 35–40 minutes, basting halfway through.
  4. Broil for Char: For extra char, broil the chicken for 2–3 minutes at the end.
  5. Rest and Serve: Let the chicken rest before serving with rice or greens.

Notes

  • This recipe can also be made with boneless chicken thighs, adjusting the cooking time accordingly.
  • Pair the dish with jasmine rice or steamed greens for a complete meal.
