A flavorful and aromatic recipe for Char Siu Chicken Roast that combines traditional Chinese flavors with tender chicken pieces. This dish is marinated in a savory blend of hoisin sauce, honey, and spices, then roasted to perfection for a sticky, charred finish.
Ingredients
Marinade:
- 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon Chinese Shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring (optional, for traditional color)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
Chicken:
- 2 lbs bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs or drumsticks
Instructions
- Prepare the Marinade: In a medium bowl, whisk together all the marinade ingredients. Reserve 2 tablespoons for basting.
- Marinate the Chicken: Coat the chicken pieces with the marinade, cover, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Roast the Chicken: Preheat the oven, place the chicken on a rack, and roast at 400°F for 35–40 minutes, basting halfway through.
- Broil for Char: For extra char, broil the chicken for 2–3 minutes at the end.
