Description

Carmelitas are rich, gooey dessert bars made with layers of buttery oats, melted chocolate, and sweet caramel. They’re easy to make and perfect for sharing—or keeping all to yourself! With just a few pantry ingredients, you’ll have a crowd-pleasing treat in no time.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

  • 1 cup caramel sauce (or 35-40 soft caramels melted with 2 tbsp heavy cream)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

  • In a large bowl, mix melted butter, brown sugar, vanilla, flour, oats, and baking soda until combined.

  • Press half of the mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake for 10 minutes.

  • Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the base.

  • Pour caramel sauce evenly over the chocolate layer.

  • Crumble the remaining oat mixture over the top.

  • Return to the oven and bake for 15–20 more minutes, or until the top is golden and the caramel is bubbly.

  • Let cool completely (chilling in the fridge helps them set), then slice into bars.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days, or refrigerate for a firmer texture.
– You can use dark chocolate chips or chopped chocolate for a richer flavor.
– For easier cutting, chill the bars before slicing.
