Description
These Caramel Apple Cake Mix Bars are a deliciously easy dessert combining moist yellow cake mix crust with tender cinnamon-spiced apples, gooey caramel, and crunchy toffee bits. Sweetened condensed milk poured over the top creates a rich custard-like finish after baking, making these bars a perfect treat for fall or any sweet craving.
Ingredients
Crust
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- 1 large egg
- 6 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
Filling
- 2 cups diced apples
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ½ cup toffee bits
- ½ cup caramel bits or chopped caramel candies
- 1 (14-oz) can sweetened condensed milk
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare: Preheat your oven to 350ºF (175ºC). Lightly spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Make the crust: In a medium bowl, combine the yellow cake mix, melted butter, and the egg. Mix until well combined and press the mixture firmly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish to create an even crust layer.
- Prepare the apples: Peel and dice the apples into small pieces. Place them in a bowl, sprinkle with cinnamon, and toss to evenly coat all the pieces with cinnamon for warm spiced flavor.
- Assemble the filling: Spread the cinnamon-coated apples evenly over the cake mix crust in the baking dish. Then sprinkle the toffee bits and caramel bits or chopped caramel candies evenly on top of the apples.
- Add the topping: Pour the entire can of sweetened condensed milk evenly over the layered apples, toffee, and caramel. This will soak into the filling and create a rich, custardy texture as it bakes.
- Bake the bars: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the top is set and golden. Remove from oven and allow the bars to cool completely before slicing into 24 pieces for serving.
Notes
- Use tart apple varieties like Granny Smith for best balance with the sweet caramel and cake mix.
- Make sure to cool the bars completely before cutting to get clean slices.
- You can substitute caramel bits with chopped soft caramel candies if caramel bits aren’t available.
- Store any leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
- For a nutty twist, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts on top before baking.
