Description

A classic Caprese Salad featuring ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and fragrant basil leaves drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and optionally finished with balsamic glaze. This quick and refreshing Italian appetizer highlights simple, fresh ingredients in just 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Salad Ingredients

  • 4 ripe tomatoes (preferably heirloom or vine-ripened)
  • 1 ball fresh mozzarella cheese (about 8 ounces)
  • Fresh basil leaves

Seasoning

  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • Balsamic glaze (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Wash the tomatoes and basil leaves thoroughly and pat them dry with paper towels. Slice the tomatoes and fresh mozzarella cheese into 1/4-inch thick slices to ensure uniformity and easy layering.
  2. Assemble the Salad: Arrange the tomato slices and mozzarella slices alternately on a serving platter, slightly overlapping each slice. Tuck fresh basil leaves in between the tomato and mozzarella slices to infuse aromatic flavor throughout the salad.
  3. Season the Salad: Drizzle extra virgin olive oil evenly over the arranged tomato and mozzarella slices. Then, sprinkle salt and freshly ground black pepper according to your taste preferences to enhance the fresh flavors.
  4. Optional – Add Balsamic Glaze: For an additional burst of sweet and tangy flavor, drizzle balsamic glaze over the entire salad. This adds depth and a delightful contrast to the creamy mozzarella and juicy tomatoes.
  5. Serve: Serve the Caprese Salad immediately as a light appetizer or side dish to enjoy the fresh, vibrant flavors at their peak.

Notes

  • Use the freshest, ripest tomatoes available for the best flavor.
  • If fresh mozzarella is not available, bocconcini (small mozzarella balls) can be sliced as a substitute.
  • For a dairy-free version, omit the mozzarella and add avocado slices or marinated tofu.
  • Balsamic glaze can be homemade by reducing balsamic vinegar until syrupy or store-bought for convenience.
  • This salad is best served fresh; avoid refrigerating assembled salad to preserve texture and flavor.
