Description

This Cabbage Roll Casserole takes all the flavors of traditional cabbage rolls but makes it easier to prepare in a casserole dish. Layers of cabbage, seasoned ground beef, rice, and cheese baked to perfection, a comforting and satisfying meal for any day of the week.

Ingredients

For the casserole:

  • 1 large head of green cabbage, chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups cooked white rice
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare the filling: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook ground beef, onion, and garlic until beef is browned. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and seasonings. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  2. Layer the casserole: In a greased baking dish, layer half of the cabbage, beef mixture, and rice. Repeat layers. Cover and bake for 45 minutes.
  3. Finish baking: Uncover, top with cheese, and bake for an additional 10–15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly. Garnish with parsley.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, use ground turkey or chicken.
  • This casserole freezes well for up to 3 months.
