Description

Bunny buns are soft, slightly sweet bread rolls shaped like adorable little rabbits—perfect for Easter, spring gatherings, or a fun baking project with kids. These fluffy buns have a light, buttery flavor and are just as delicious as they are cute. Serve them warm with butter or jam, or use them as festive dinner rolls.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • ¾ cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for brushing)

Optional

  • Currants or mini chocolate chips for eyes

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk with a pinch of sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Prepare Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead Dough: Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic, or use a stand mixer with a dough hook.
  4. First Rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape Buns: Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each into a round body, pinch a small piece for the tail, and form two small pointed pieces for the ears.
  6. Assemble Bunnies: Arrange each shaped bunny on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Use currants or mini chocolate chips to create eyes, if desired.
  7. Second Rise: Cover the buns loosely and let them rise again for 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Brush and Bake: Brush the buns with milk and bake for 15–18 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Cool and Serve: Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with butter or jam.

Notes

  • Add a hint of cinnamon or orange zest to the dough for extra flavor.
  • For a sweeter version, drizzle with icing after baking.
  • These buns freeze well — reheat gently before serving.
