Description

This Meat Lovers Pizza Bread is a flavorful and hearty dish that combines seasoned ground beef, pepperoni, and a blend of cheeses wrapped in a braided pizza dough. Perfect for a crowd, it’s baked until golden brown and served with warm pizza sauce for dipping, making it a delicious treat for any pizza lover.

Ingredients

Meat Mixture

  • 1/2 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/3 cup pizza sauce (from jar)

Pizza Bread

  • 1 jar pizza sauce (divided, about 1 cup total)
  • 1 tube (13.8 oz) refrigerated pizza dough
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 2 oz thin-sliced pepperoni (about 1/3 cup)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/8 teaspoon dried oregano

Instructions

  1. Preheat and cook beef: Preheat your oven to 400°F. In a large non-stick skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat with 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano, garlic powder, and kosher salt until the beef is fully browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Combine beef with sauce: Allow the cooked beef to cool slightly, then stir in 1/3 cup of the pizza sauce. Set this mixture aside for assembling the pizza bread.
  3. Prepare dough base: Unroll the refrigerated pizza dough onto a baking sheet. Gently stretch the dough into a rectangle shape, being careful to keep it even and not tear it.
  4. Add sauce on dough: Spread 1/2 cup of pizza sauce down the center strip of the dough, leaving the wider edges of the dough clear for braiding.
  5. Layer the fillings: Over the pizza sauce, layer the provolone cheese slices first, followed by the thin-sliced pepperoni, the seasoned ground beef mixture, and finally sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  6. Create the braid: Cut 1-inch strips along both sides of the dough. Fold these strips over the filling alternately in a braided pattern, securing all the fillings inside the dough.
  7. Brush and season dough: Brush the entire braided dough with melted butter. Sprinkle the top evenly with grated Parmesan cheese and the remaining 1/8 teaspoon dried oregano for added flavor and a golden finish.
  8. Bake the bread: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and cooked through. Meanwhile, heat the remaining pizza sauce to serve as a dip.
  9. Rest and serve: Remove the pizza bread from the oven and allow it to cool for about 5 minutes. Slice into portions and serve warm with the heated pizza sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Make sure to drain excess fat from the cooked ground beef to prevent the bread from becoming soggy.
  • Use a pizza stone instead of a baking sheet if you want a crisper bottom crust.
  • For a spicier version, add crushed red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.
  • Let the braided dough cool slightly before slicing to help maintain the shape and structure.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven to retain crispiness.
