Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients on box: eggs, oil, water)
For the Filling:
- 1 (3.5-ounce) box instant chocolate pudding mix
- 2 cups cold milk
For the Topping:
- 1 (21-ounce) can cherry pie filling
- 1 (8-ounce) tub whipped topping (thawed)
- 1/4 cup chocolate shavings or mini chocolate chips
- Maraschino cherries for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven and prepare cake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Prepare and bake chocolate cake according to package directions. Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes.
- Prepare pudding filling: In a bowl, whisk together pudding mix and cold milk for 2 minutes until thickened. Pour the pudding over the cake, filling the holes. Let cool completely.
- Add cherry layer and toppings: Spread cherry pie filling over the cake. Top with whipped topping, chocolate shavings, and cherries if desired. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.
Notes
- For a richer cake, add 1/2 teaspoon almond extract to the cherry pie filling.
- You can use homemade chocolate cake and fresh whipped cream for a fully-from-scratch version.
