Description

Indulge in the comforting warmth and rich flavors of this Best French Onion Soup. Caramelized onions, savory broth, and gooey Gruyère cheese come together perfectly in this classic French soup.

Ingredients

Onions:

  • 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

Seasonings:

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Broth and Herbs:

  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 6 cups beef broth (low sodium)
  • 2 sprigs fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Additional:

  • 1 baguette, sliced
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: In a large pot, melt butter and olive oil. Add onions, salt, and sugar. Cook until caramelized.
  2. Add Flavors: Stir in garlic, then deglaze with wine. Add broth, thyme, and bay leaf. Simmer.
  3. Prepare Toasts: Toast baguette slices in the oven.
  4. Assemble and Serve: Ladle soup into bowls, top with toast and cheese. Broil until bubbly.

Notes

  • For deeper flavor, use a mix of beef and chicken broth.
  • If you don’t have broiler-safe bowls, melt the cheese on the toasts separately and place them on the soup before serving.
