Ingredients
Onions:
- 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
Seasonings:
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Broth and Herbs:
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
- 6 cups beef broth (low sodium)
- 2 sprigs fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Additional:
- 1 baguette, sliced
- 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
Instructions
- Caramelize Onions: In a large pot, melt butter and olive oil. Add onions, salt, and sugar. Cook until caramelized.
- Add Flavors: Stir in garlic, then deglaze with wine. Add broth, thyme, and bay leaf. Simmer.
