Description

Beef Yakiniku is a classic Japanese grilled beef dish featuring thinly sliced, marinated short ribs or ribeye with a savory and slightly sweet sauce. Perfectly charred and juicy, this dish brings the authentic flavors of Japanese barbecue right to your table, ideal for quick weeknight dinners or special gatherings.

Ingredients

Beef and Marinade

  • 1 pound thinly sliced beef short ribs or ribeye
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons mirin
  • 2 tablespoons sake
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

For Cooking

  • Vegetable oil for grilling

Instructions

  1. Prepare Marinade: In a mixing bowl, whisk together soy sauce, mirin, sake, sugar, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, and toasted sesame seeds until the sugar has fully dissolved to create the marinade.
  2. Marinate Beef: Add the thinly sliced beef into the marinade, tossing thoroughly to coat each piece evenly. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. Heat Grill Surface: Preheat a grill pan, cast iron skillet, or outdoor grill over medium-high heat. Lightly brush or spray the surface with vegetable oil to prevent sticking.
  4. Grill Beef: Arrange the marinated beef slices in a single layer on the hot grill surface. Cook each side for 1 to 2 minutes until the meat is lightly charred and cooked through but still tender and juicy.
  5. Serve: Remove the beef from the grill and serve immediately. Optionally, accompany with steamed rice and grilled vegetables such as sliced onions or mushrooms for a complete meal.

Notes

  • For best taste, select well-marbled beef thinly sliced to ensure tenderness.
  • Avoid overcooking to keep the yakiniku flavorful, tender, and juicy.
  • Add sliced onions or mushrooms to the grill alongside the beef for extra flavor and a complete dish.
