Description
This Beef Onion Stir-Fry is a quick and flavorful Asian-inspired main course that combines tender sliced flank steak with savory sauces and sautéed onions. Perfect for a weeknight dinner, the beef is marinated in a blend of soy, oyster, and hoisin sauces, then seared and stir-fried with onions and garlic for a delicious meal served over steamed rice.
Ingredients
Beef Marinade
- 1 pound flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
Stir-Fry
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (divided)
- 1 large yellow onion, sliced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
Optional Garnish
- 2 green onions, sliced
- Sesame seeds
Instructions
- Marinate the Beef: In a bowl, combine the thinly sliced beef with soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, cornstarch, sesame oil, and ground black pepper. Toss well to coat all the slices evenly and let the mixture marinate for 15–30 minutes to enhance the flavor.
- Sear the Beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and sear each side for 2–3 minutes until the meat is browned but still tender. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside to prevent overcooking.
- Sauté Onions and Garlic: Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the same pan. Add the sliced onion and cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions soften and begin to caramelize. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds to release its aroma.
- Combine and Heat: Return the seared beef to the pan with the onions and garlic. Toss everything together and stir-fry for another 1–2 minutes until the beef is heated through and coated well in the flavorful sauce.
- Serve: Serve the stir-fry hot over steamed rice and garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds, if desired, for added color and texture.
Notes
- You can add bell peppers or broccoli for extra vegetables and nutrients.
- For a saucier dish, double the soy, oyster, and hoisin sauce quantities and add a splash of water or broth during the stir-fry.
