Description

These Baked Cheese Buns are soft, fluffy bread rolls stuffed with melted cheese, perfect for a savory snack or side. Made with simple ingredients like all-purpose flour, yeast, and a cheesy filling, they are easy to prepare and bake to golden perfection. Customize them with garlic, herbs, or extra cheese on top for enhanced flavor.

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg

Filling and Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)
  • 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • Optional: garlic powder, dried herbs, or extra cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt. Add the warm milk, softened butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough: Knead by hand for 8–10 minutes or with a dough hook for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  3. Divide and fill: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 10–12 equal pieces. Flatten each piece slightly and place a tablespoon of shredded cheese in the center. Pinch and seal the dough around the cheese to form a bun.
  4. Second rise: Place buns seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven and prepare buns: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the buns with the egg wash made from egg yolk and water. Sprinkle with garlic powder, herbs, or extra cheese if desired.
  6. Bake: Bake the buns for 18–20 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
  7. Cool and serve: Allow the cheese buns to cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

  • Use a blend of cheeses for more complex flavor.
  • Add cooked bacon bits, caramelized onions, or jalapeños to the filling to vary the taste.
  • These buns taste best warm but can be reheated in the oven or microwave.
