Description

Classic American Buttercream Frosting made with creamy unsalted butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. This easy-to-make frosting is light, fluffy, and perfect for spreading or piping on cakes and cupcakes.

Ingredients

Frosting Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 23 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Beat the Butter: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter on medium speed until creamy and pale, about 2–3 minutes.
  2. Add Powdered Sugar: Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until combined to avoid a powdered sugar cloud.
  3. Add Vanilla and Salt: Stir in the vanilla extract and salt, then increase speed to medium and beat for another 1–2 minutes to incorporate fully.
  4. Adjust Consistency: Add heavy cream or milk one tablespoon at a time, beating continuously until the frosting is smooth, fluffy, and spreadable.
  5. Scrape Bowl: Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure everything is evenly mixed.

Notes

  • If the frosting is too thick, add a little more cream to loosen it.
  • If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar to thicken.
  • For a whiter frosting, use clear vanilla extract and whip the butter a bit longer.
  • This frosting holds well for both piping intricate designs and spreading smoothly on cakes or cupcakes.
