- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Caramelized Onions:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
Additional Toppings:
- 8 slices Gruyère cheese (or Swiss)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- Lettuce and tomato slices for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, warm olive oil. Add onions, sugar, salt, and pepper, and cook for 20–25 minutes until caramelized. Stir in garlic, broth, and thyme, and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Cook Patties: Season beef patties with salt and pepper. Cook for 4–5 minutes per side until desired doneness. Top with Gruyère to melt.
- Toast Croissants: Lightly toast croissant halves with butter until golden.
- Assemble Burgers: Layer lettuce and tomato on croissant bottom, add patty, caramelized onions, and top with the other croissant half.
Notes
- For added flavor, spread Dijon mustard or aioli on the croissants.
- Handle croissants gently to prevent squishing the burger.
