Kothavarangai poriyal – prepared with beans, onions, garlic and is a stir fry recipe. this beans sabzi is one of the famous south indian poriyal, which will be served along with rice or chapathi or sambar rice tastes awesome . kothavarangai means beans in tamil. this kothavarangai poriyal is also known as cluster beans curry. We can say this is bachelors recipe as this does not require much cooking skills.

Beans curry is very simple and delicious. If you want other beans poriyal recipe then try this Kothavarangai poriyal with ground nuts gravy. as beans are rich in fiber, i will include them in our diet once or twice in a week. to get better taste chop beans and onions into very fine pieces.

ingredients

  • 15 -20 Kothavarangai or cluster beans
  • 1 medium onion
  • 5 garlic pods
  • 1 tbsp chilli powder
  • 1 ½ tbsp. salt
  • ½ tbsp. Masala powder
  • 1/4th cup of water
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 1/4th of cumin seeds and mustard seeds
  • 1/4th of turmeric powder

how to make kothavarangai poriyal with step by step photos

  1. Wash all the cluster beans or Kothavarangai.
  2. cut top and tail of all the cluster beans and discard them. Chop them into inch pieces.
  3. Chop the onion into fine pieces.
  4. Heat a kadai or cooker, add oil. After oil gets heated add mustard seeds fry for few second, cumin seeds fry for another few seconds. Now add chopped onions, salt, turmeric powder, garlic pods. i have added garlic pods as it is, you can add smashed garlic.

  5. Fry them until onions got nice pink color. stir in between while onions are frying to avoid burning of onions.

  6. Now add all the beans and fry for 2 minutes.

  7. Add 1.4th cup of water and keep the lid and cook for 3 whistles.

  8. After cooker gets cooled remove the lid and fry for 2 minutes to remove the excess vapour.
  9. Enjoy this poriyal or cluster beans curry with hot rice and sambar rice.
