I have added one medium onion in the poriyal, in case if you want more onions in the curry then add another one small onion. Garlic will add a nice punch to the poriyal. This poriyal can be prepared by everyone as it doesn’t require much vegetable chopping or grinding masala.

How to chop beetroots:

Step 1:

Wash and peel the skin of beetroot with the peeler like as we do for potatoes.

Step 2:

Chop beetroot on glass plate or any work place, don’t chop on regular chopping board, if you chop on regular chopping board then wash immediately after chopping. Cut beetroot into two halves.

Step 3:

Then take one half and chop it into thin horizontal lines and then into vertical lines so now you get tiny small beetroot pieces.

Step 4:

Repeat same for another half beetroot.

how to make beetroot curry with step by step photos

  1. Start the process of poriyal by washing beetroot. peel the skin of beetroot with peeler rather than knife. Now chop the beetroot into small pieces.
  2. Chop onion into fine pieces. remove the skin of garlic.
  3. Peel the skin of potatoes and chop them into fine pieces (do this step when you are preparing the curry otherwise potato pieces will get brown, in case if you want to do chop potatoes in beforehand then keep them in water, so that they won’t decolor).
  4. To make beetroot curry, heat a cooker or kadai, then add oil and add jeera fry for 1 minute.
  5. Then add 1/4th of turmeric powder, 1 tbsp. of chili powder, 4 garlic pods (take skin of garlic), sliced onions and salt. Fry them until onions get translucent.

  6. Now add cubed potatoes and beetroot and fry for 3 minutes.beetroot poriyal | beetroot curry for chapathi | beetroot poriyal for rice

  7. Add ½ glass of water and keep lid and cook for 3 whistles.

  8. After cooker gets cooled, remove the lid and check if any water is left then fry the curry until water evaporates and oil oozes out from the curry.
  9. Switch off the flame and transfer into serving bowl.
  10. Serve poriyal with hot rice or chapathi.

  • 1 medium Beetroot
